Earth Charter Youth Event at the Peoples Summit

Post by Nora Mahmoud

On June 18th, the Brazilian Earth Charter youth network organized an international EC youth event with the intention of having a dialogue to reflect and share experiences youth have had with the Earth Charter. The

It was really nice to have met and connected with the main organizers of the event and leaders of the EC Brazilian youth network, Pedro Piccolo and Gabriela Batista who also spoke about the importance of the Earth Charter in the activities they do and encouraged all youth to join and endorse the Earth Charter. I also had some time to talk, (actually I screamed in order for the entire amphitheater to hear me!) about the EC youth network and give the participants concrete examples about what the global youth network is doing and how they can get involved in our virtual capacity building forums and short courses. I also expressed the need for youth to be heard and included in the negotiating processes at Rio+20 and that due to the dismal outcome document, youth are extremely frustrated and tired of not being listened to. However, because of the superstar speakers who followed us: the girl who silenced the world for five minutes back at the 92 Earth Summit, Severn Suzuki, and the revered Marina Silva, the attendance, spirits, and media publicity were astounding!
